I was recently reading of Paul’s shipwreck at sea (Acts 27) when it struck me how Luke in his recounting reports the actual number, 276 people, on board (Acts 27:37). Even in the storm and shipwreck, it mattered to know how many were there. Maybe to be sure every mouth on board was fed, since Paul was overseeing their shared meal. Or maybe to be sure all were ashore safely, accounted for in the aftermath of
Numbers can be abused in church work. But numbers can also help us take care of people and pay attention to each other’s needs. Numbers can also be heart indicators. Jesus taught, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Please see the numbers reported here in that spirit.
