Prostitution is said to be the worlds oldest profession carried on through out the generations. The only difference between Ancient Times and now is it was 100% legal, licensed, and taxed. Owning a brothel was a legitimate business. Even though prostitution was frowned upon, it was very much so accepted.
Where did these men and women come from? They were men, women, and children mainly captured from different locations after the Greeks and/or Romans destroyed and conquered their home villages/cities and were sold into slavery. They also consisted of abandoned children, and non-citizens.
Another common thing where female prostitutes came from, were if their families had decided they didn't want the babies girls they would abandon them, they then had no choice but to become a prostitute.
-Had citizenship rights, but were constricted rights.
-Restricted to their household
-Were not allowed in public, so slaves were sent to acquire whatever was needed.
-Were not allowed to be seen, or talk to men outside of her family.
-Adultery had severe consiquences
-If the husband or male family member had company, she needed to stay hidden for the duration of the visit.
-Her family would pick which suitor would be her husband.
-If they decided they did not ever marry, they were cast out and became Hetaera's in the prostitute world.
Gaining your freedom from slavery/prostitution was easier said than done.
As a prostitute whatever you own, also belonged to your master, boss, who ever owned you. One of the most common ways out of slavery/prostitution was to find a genuine 3rd party to pay for your freedom, buy you from your owner with pure intentions.
But even after your freedom is bought, what we think of as freedom is completely different, they would only have control of their finances, and life but had absolutely no social status or citizenship rights.
