Q5-HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
Who is my audience?
The genre my group and I decided for our opening sequence was Paranormal Thriller/horror. in order for us to attract our audience we had to have a good understand on who the target audience was for the type of genre we we done. After we analysed many different opening sequences for Paranormal thriller/horror films we understood that the audience for our opening sequence would be 15-18 year olds of both genders, The films i analysed within my research were Paranormal Activity, Red Lights and Insidious, after researching these films I was able to understand the codes and conventions of Paranormal thriller/horror films therefore when planning the opening sequence I knew what I had to include so that our opening sequence followed the conventions of a film of this genre however, as a group we decided to challenge these conventions in certain ways to make the opening sequence more intriguing and less predictable for the audience.
From my research I found out that it is mainly young adults who watch films of this genre as the working class wouldn't want to come home and frighten themselves, they would rather come home and relax whereas young adults tend to watch scary films with their friends as they find this entertaining. Also, we decided that our target audience should be 15 and above as the contents within our opening sequence may be seen as frightening to some views, and some of the films I researched included similar contents to our opening sequence and theirs was rated 15. What does the audience want to see?
From my research I learnt that when watching a Paranormal thriller/horror film my target audience would want to be able to feel the tension and suspense being built up throughout the opening sequence. Also, the audience wouldn't expect to see the spirit as in films such as Paranormal Activity the audience never sees the spirit, just shadows. Due to this we decided to intrigue our audience more by allowing them to see the antagonist. By doing this allowed us to pull the audience into the opening sequence, intriguing them which is what they want they opening sequence to do so it isn't boring for them.
Also, when researching our target audience I learnt that the audience wants to be kept on the edge of their seat for the opening sequence as that is what they expect when watching a film from this genre therefore when creating the opening sequence we tried to make as many unexpected things happen such as the the picture frame falling and the spirit popping up behind our main character as this allowed the audience to keep question what was going to happen next.
How did I attract my audience?
Due to all of the research I carried our, I learnt who my target audience was and what they expect from a paranormal horror/thriller film in order for it to be successful and attract them. I found out that the audience wants to be kept on the edge of their seat, and to never be able to guess what is going to happen next.
In order to attract the correct target audience I made sure that my opening sequence included both; unexpected scenes/occurrences and made the story line believable. I followed most of the codes and conventions of a typical paranormal horror/thriller which I learnt about within my research.
One of the best ways in which I was able to attract my target audience was by using YouTube and Twitter as these are very popular social media sites which most 15-18 year old use therefore I believe this is the best way in which I can attract them.
I attracted my audience using YouTube & Twitter....
This is two ways in which I addressed my target audience as I posted the production on YouTube so people from all over the world were able to view my media product, and if my group and I are lucky hopefully some viewers will leave comments and tell us what we have/haven't done well when trying to follow all of the codes and conventions of our genre. Furthermore, I post the link for my production on Youtube to my twitter page as it allowed me to show people on twitter the video and if they clicked on the link they would be directed straight to the production allowing them to watch it and tell us what they think. Also, our target audience is 15-18 year olds of both genders, people of this age group tend to use all social media sites therefore by posting the link on Twitter is a very effective way in getting my target audiences attention as most people from this age group uses Twitter therefore it is very likely we will attract the right audience due to the majority of twitter users being within this age range.
Links to other films....
My opening sequence was influenced by two other Paranormal horror/thriller films. We based our opening sequence on a typical film from this genre; a young girl is being haunted due to the house she lives in. The opening sequence shows how she is a typical young girl however, strange occurrence's have began to happen but the main character (Clara) doesn't see any of these occurrences and doesn't suspect anything until the end of the opening sequence. This part of the opening sequence was influence by the film, The Conjuring. Furthermore, the end of our opening sequence was also linked to Paranormal Activity and Insidious's as the titles were in a similar order as what Paranormal Activities and Insidious's were for example, we put the main title of our opening sequence as the ending which is the same as what the two films done.
Another technique in which I used within my opening sequence which is a trend within most films of this genre is the shots I decided on using for example, I used many close up shots as this type of shot is key when trying to build tension and suspense. This links to all the films I researched (Paranormal Activity, Red lights and Insidious) as all of these use many close ups but also use long and medium shots in between close ups which is what we done when creating our opening sequence.
