Development Of Life
From Inception to Today.
From dead chemistry that needs to assemble itself into self-replicating patterns, stable & resilient, but also able to change & evolve.
Our early life to become more complex & use the available energy much more efficiently.
These cells combine to become multicellular organisms,
enabling unbelievable variety and further complexity.
The species evolves big brains, enabling the use of tools, culture & shared knowledge, which creates higher complexity.
The species have now become the dominant lifeform on its planet.
First shy attempts to leave its planet are happening.
This is where we are right now.
Universal Principle for civilisation
Since planets have a limited carrying capacity & lifespan, if a species wants to survive, it will look for more spaces to spread to...
1. Colonize your own solar system.
2. Spread further to reach other stars.
3. Become a galactic wide civilization.
Knowing that there are upto 500 billion planets in the milky way and atleast 10 billion earth like planets, many have been billions of years longer than earth. But we are observing zero galactic wide civilizations.
The Great Filter
This means something is preventing living things from climbing the staircase, beyond the step we're on right now.
Something that makes becoming a galactic wide civilisation extremely hard, or maybe IMPOSSIBLE.
What is a Great Filter?
A challenge or danger so hard to overcome, that eliminates almost every species that encounters it.
Scenario 1 : Filter is Behind us
We are the first.
We are the lucky ones.
How likely it is for life to emerge from dead things?
Some scientists says that it develops everywhere whenever the condition is right. Some says Earth might be the only living place in the universe.
There was a primitive hunter cell which swallowed another cell, but instead of devouring it, the two cells formed a union. The bigger cell provided shelter, took care of interacting with environment & providing resources while the smaller one used its new home & free stuff to focus on providing extra energy for its host. With this energy, the host cell could grow more than before and build new things to improve itself. While the guest became the powerhouse of the cell. These cells make up every animal on the planet.
Maybe there are billions of planets covered with bacteria in the milky way, but not a single one apart from us has achieved our level of complexity...or "Intelligence".
Scenario 2 :Filter is of Ahead Us
If a great filter lies before us, it has to be so dangerous so purely devastating and powerful that it has destroyed most, if not all advanced civilizations in our galaxy over billion of years.
A really daunting and depressing hypothesis is that once a species takes control over its planet, its already on the path of self destruction.
Technology is a good way to achieve that.
TO BE CONTD.
Several possibilities of war leading to :
A large scale Nuclear-war.
1. Nanotechnology that gets out of control.
2. Super-Intelligent AI that accidently(or purposely) destroys its creators. etc
Let's just hope that's not the case.
So, if the filter is ahead of us our odds are really bad.
What we can hope for.
So, it would be less favourable to find life beyond earth. Because, the more common and complex life is in the other parts of universe, the more likely it becomes that the filter is ahead of us.
Bacterias would be bad
Small animals would be worse
Intelligent life would be alarming
Ruins of ancient intelligent life would be horrible
