Collaborative learning is when a small group of learners get together to form a common goal. This can be used interchangeably but cooperative work that can involve division among the members, while also working together to solve the problems (Loes).
Online collaborative learning means participants learning together in teams using information communication technologies, in particular, the Internet, as the mediating tools.
What is known about collaborative online learning?
Enable students with diverse backgrounds and from differing locations to communicate so that multiple perspectives and solutions to problems could be obtained (Eugenia M. W. Ng).
Collaborative learning techniques can be used for discussion, for problem solving, and for engaging students with writing (Chad N. Loes).
Collaborative online learning is becoming more and more common.
Studies have indicated that in collaborative learning, well-performing groups elaborate fur- ther each other’s responses and ask complex questions, which refer to high levels of cognitive processing (Essi Vuopala, Pirkko Hyvönen, Sanna Järvelä).
What we do not know and/or what might not be obvious about collaborative online learning.
Most of us learn collaboratively without realizing it: Whether it is through networking, social media, for a job, or for school.
Enable learners to discuss their subject matter in greater depth and thus considerably enhance their critical thinking skills (Eugenia M. W. Ng).
It is discovered that exposure to collaborative learning activities had a positive influence on the students’ openness to diversity, regardless of their individual background characteristics (Chad N. Loes).
collaborative learning shifts away from an instructor-centered classroom to an educational environment that emphasizes students teaching one another under the guidance of an instructor who provides materials and ideas in an effort to facilitate learning (Chad N. Loes).

I have implemented collaborative learning with my classmates through Google Docs a lot. It was an easy way for us to connect with each other for a group project while juggling our schedules
Is collaborative online learning just for school?
We never stop learning. Collaborative learning will continue to be a part of our lives, and can actually become increasingly more in the workforce.
Are there negatives with collaborative learning?
Sometimes for group projects, there can be students that choose not to participate as much as their peers.
