On June 7, 1948, the United States, Britain, and France announced a plan. They would unite their zones to form a new West German nation. Stalin reacted quickly. On June 24, 1948,The Soviets hoped the blockade would force the West out of Berlin.the United States and Great Britain organized an airlift to save the city. American and British planes began flying food, fuel, and other supplies into West Berlin.
OnApril 4, 1949 The Western democracies agreed that the best way to contain the Soviets was military cooperation . The United States, Canada, and 10 Western European nations formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Members created an alliance and agreed to help member that was attacked.
On October 1, 1949 Communist forces for Mao Zedong defeated armies led by China's leader Chiang Kai-shek. Mao Zedong formed a new Communist state, the People's Republic of China. In spite of this the Americans recognize Kai-shek as the leader. A fear spread that all of Asia would fall to communism.
On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when soldiers from the North Korean Army infiltrated across the boundary between the Soviet-allied Democratic Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Germany Republic of Korea to the south. This was the first military action of the Cold War.

Sputnik was the world's first artificial satellite which was launched by the Soviets. This has been know to have initiated "The Space Age". It was launched on October 4, 1957, and left Americans awestruck and slightly defeated, seeing as they thought they would accomplish this first.
In Cuba, there had been an American- approved leader but in 1959 he was overthrown by a man named Fidel Castro. He brought communism upon Cuba and the Americans didn't like. Fast forward two years and the Americans had had enough and they launched ad invasion in April of 1961, known as the Bay of Pigs. It was not successful, after just 24 hours American forces relented. It was dubbed this name due to the area of the invasion.

In 1956, South Vietnam, with American support, refused to hold unification elections. By 1958, Communist-led Viet Cong, began to battle the South Vietnamese government.
On August 13, 1961, the Communist government of East Germany began to build a barbed wire and concrete wall between East and West Berlin. The original purpose of this Berlin Wall was to keep Westerners from entering East Germany and disrupting the socialist state, but it primarily served the purpose of prohibiting large movements from East to West. The Berlin Wall stood until November 9, 1989.
Leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union had a tense, 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 about the presence of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles in Cuba, not far from U.S. shores. In a TV address on President John Kennedy made Americans aware about the prominence of the missiles, and explained his decision to create a blockade around Cuba and made it clear the U.S. was prepared to use military force if necessary to remove this apparent threat to national security.
