What are the causes and effects of POVERTY in the U.S.?
I chose this topic because I feel that it is overlooked by topics most people pretend to care about such as racism, gender and race inequality, and etc. These are only factors that effect poverty in a negative way, but poverty has been here since the very beginning.
Personal Reflection :
Main Research Question :
WHAT is poverty?
Demographics : statistical data relating to the population and particular groups (races and or ethnicities) within it.
Economic Development : the process by which the well-being of a nation improves because of progress in technology, progress in science and also because of general economic growth and innovation.
The Great Recession : a period of general economic decline observed in world markets during the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Nationalism : advocacy of or support for the political independence of a particular nation or people.
Generalization : a stereotype made based on a certain group of people.
There are multiple definitions for poverty but in this case there is only the need for this one I squashed together on short notice.
Poverty can be the state of being extremely poor, the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount.
Definitions/ Events YOU Need to Know :
WHO is the problem?
We are the problem. We discriminate against one another, a huge percentage factor of our population does not vote, and our belief of superiority fills in the void for what we lack : equality and fair oppurtunities within our own borders.
WHO is the problem? (continued)
Examples of discrimination and generalization :
Factors like racism and nationalism have caused us to drift away from the moral foundation of our country.
Ronald Reagan's Campaign of 1980 led people to believe that he would reduce poverty in the U.S. and help take back the government's money being stolen by minorities. He based his goals on a woman named Linda Taylor who was convicted of Welfare Fraud and went to prison soon after her trial in 1977, and she just happened to be black. The generalization he made only seemed to contradict itself later after his presidency term.
The fluctuation of poverty rates in the United States is due to obstacles being presented and overcome only to hit another wall on the other side.
Mississippi currently leads in having the highest poverty percentage rate of 19.8%.
Rates of Poverty in the United States :
Red : + 15%
Orange : + 13%
Yellow : + 10 %
WHERE is poverty in the U.S. ?
Welfare Program Statistics
On average 21 percent of Americans participate in at least one government assistance program.
43 percent of Americans signed up for welfare programs have been participating for over 3 years.
18 percent of all U.S. adults have received food stamps at some point in their lives. Over half of Americans receiving housing assistance have been enrolled for over three years. Only 10 percent of Americans receiving housing assistance pass the requirements for housing assistance over three years.
51 percent of immigrant-led households in the United States are enrolled in one or more government welfare program.
Factors such as Racism and Gender Inequality act as obstacles that we would have to overcome in order to reduce our poverty level as a whole.
WHAT will it take to reduce poverty in the United States?
Jobs can be created.
Minimum wage could be increased.
Paid leave and sick days can be provided.
Stable work schedules that work for the employee can be established.
Medicaid can be expanded.

Based on this website providing me with graphs and information of labor force demographics of the population, I can use that information to to compare the amount of our population in the labor force who use programs that help their ways of life, for example STAMPS or WIC, in comparison to those in the labor force who don’t.5) Kochhar, Rekesh. “Latinos’ Incomes Higher Than Before Great Recession, but U.S.-Born Latinos Yet to Recover”. 7 March 2019. Pew Research Center. 29 April 2019.. This website describes the transition of Hispanics after going through the Great Recession and how predictions of U.S. born Latinos will be behind . The income trends relate to my comparison of different races who are employed and use welfare programs versus those who are just employed and survive without the use of government programs, as well as in contrast to those of different races.
6) “‘Welfare Queen’ Becomes Issue in Reagan Campaign”. 15 February 1976. The New York Times. 29 April 2019. .Ronald Reagan’s campaign was based on the belief that he would reduce poverty and take back the country’s money to help the debt we were in. These assumptions in contrast to who really uses most of the government’s Welfare programs helps to backup my reasoning of behind my hypothesis : that poverty is changing us and inhibiting our advancement economically and socially as a nation.7) Nyhan, Paul. “U.S. Poverty Rate Falls. But Poor Push for More Progress”. 13 September 2017. Marguerite Casey Foundation. 29 April 2019. https://caseygrants.org/evn/u-s-poverty-rate-falls-but-poor-push-for-more-progress/?gclid=CjwKCAjwwZrmBRA7EiwA4iMzBEg6qLGeyukYp5ThDxFqNPcR3u_EVCX-Bt-w7Csw3_zYNTTEOfujERoCrNwQAvD_BwEThis article helps to distinguish the difference between poverty and the poor, because they are two different classes of people. This is helpful because it can help me to explain the difference and give examples, in order to explain my reasoning behind my hypothesis.8) Sparks, Sarah. “Timeline : The War on Poverty”. 23 January 2014. Editorial Projects in Education. 29 April 2019. .This timeline shows the change in poverty overtime and how it contributed to the inhibiting of our economy growth as a whole population. This helps me because it gives me the factor that inhibited our people in the first place and cause poverty to increase in the U.S.9) Fischer, Claude. “Growing Up Poor Has Effects on Your Children Even If You Escape Poverty”. The Society Pages. 29 April 2019..This article explains the relationship between not only between struggles between races but the difference in opportunities given to different races. The physical things, like skin color, also stood as a border due to people beliefs of minorities having only certain rights. This helps me because it tie in the discrimination people go through, and shows the contribution of our people to poverty and how more barriers were built in contrast to passages.10) Tankersley, Jim. “Declaring War on Poverty ‘Largely Over’ , White House Urges Work Requirements for Aid”. The New York Times. 29 April 2019. .This article discusses the conflict the people have with the contribution of the government to poverty. It discusses the issues and the response of the government from a third person’s point of view. This is helpful because I can explain how the people try to get the government’s attention and how the government reacts, which i necessary because if the government is not doing anything to help the society then that needs to be brought to the light.
