Uses and Gratification (1974) - Bulmer and Katz
I have incorporated the UGT into my magazine through the contents page. The UGT suggests that magazines incorporate quizzes and competitions in order to involve the reader with the magazine and make it more fun for them. I would include exclusive materials such as free downloads, as advertised on my cover (see below) and access to other music videos and message boards.
On my contents page I have included a section called "PLUS" which would change every two weeks, as the magazine is released, to something different that readers could interact with.
Similarly, the UGT suggests that magazines compete against each other for the latest information to allow readers to indulge in the gossip. I have created a contents page that is easy to navigate around in order to find the article that you want to read and talk about. Furthermore, by including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram handles I have allowed readers to connect and thus encourage interactivity which is an important part of the UGT.
For my article, I developed a story which was dramatic in order to attract the audience and cause gossip, which could spread the name of the magazine, i.e:
"Did you hear that Delia and Alex Turner are dating?"
"Oh my god, where did you hear that?"
"I read it in DownandOut"
I also featured the fact that my artist is from a working class background and has difficulty within her family. Since the artist's parents almost filed for divorce, readers can connect with this and understand how she feels. Furthermore, her mam suffered with depression and any readers who have friends or family with depression or maybe suffer with it themselves, can connect with Delia. As I have included a deep insight into the artist's life, she does not come across as a superficial singer that has been shaped by the industry to make money; instead she is a successful female from a male dominated industry. Therefore, she is someone the audience can relate to.
