Students from elementary school Lučac from Split are authors of a documentary film about a boy who is dancing ballet. They have named their film Our Billy Elliot alluding to the famous English hit film about the dancer of the same name
Billy from Split is called Robert Žmirić and he is only male dancer younger than 20 years in his Ballet studio. There is just one more older dancer. While other boys play football, box, basketball... Robert is dancing ballet with the girls. He also shares a dressing room with them. Their coach said that because of that Robert usually changes in the restroom. But she has also said that there is no point in making a male dressing room because they rarely have male dancers.
Robert dancing ballet with girls.
There are very few male ballet dancers in Croatia so the theaters usually work with ballet dancers from Romania, Russia and other countries. I don't know if that is because ballet is very hard to learn and dance or maybe because of the well-known prejudices about male dancers. Since we were little we could hear that there are colors for girls and colors for boys, that some sports and hobbies are only for boys and not for girls.
I really like this film because it transmits the message that we should follow our dreams regardless of tradition and prejudice on genderroles
