Virtual reality basically has two components, the computer and the software, or scientifically known as the reality engine, output sensors, and input sensors.
Reality Engine- The hardware and software used to create the virtual world.
The History of VR may be Deceiving
The name "Virtual Reality" was thought of by Jaron Lanier in 1989. Virtual Reality has also been called artificial reality, cyberspace, simulated reality and virtual worlds. In 1970 Ivan Sutherland built the first Head Mounted Display.
The Components, Video and Audio.
One of the forms that virtual reality comes in is a Head-mounted display. A HMD display has two lenses, one for each eye and comes in goggle or headset form. "The HMD allows viewers to look at an image from various angles or change their field of view by simply moving their heads. In contrast, a movie is a passive experience, where the view of the audience is controlled by the position of the camera that recorded the scene." The first HMD was built by Ivan Sutherland.
In virtual reality images can be opaque, which means that they are not see-through. That means that you can only see the virtual world. Other times images in virtual reality are transparent. That means that they are see-through. You could create an image and still be able to see your surroundings, almost like a hologram.
HRTF allows you to hear below you, above you, and side to side. HRTF stands for Head-Related Transfer Functions. "HRTF audio processing enables the listener not only to locate a sound source but also to focus in on a specific sound out of a multitude of sounds, like distinguishing the call of a hot dog vendor out of a noisy crowd at a baseball game."
Virtual Reality is being created by many companies
The Microsoft HoloLens is a visor that you wear on your head. It lets you include virtual objects in your regular environment. The HoloLens will be compatible with Windows 10. It is also being used by surgeons. Volvo (the car company) has used it to create safe dashboard designs.
VR could change the way we do simple and complex and tasks.
Virtual Reality is being used in many hospitals, surgeons and now it is being used for fun.
Is VR going to be affordable?
Currently, most virtual reality systems are pretty expensive, ranging from $500-$1899. As VR becomes more known, it will become less expensive. Right now it costs a lot of money to develop so that increases the cost.
Now that you know all about the concepts of virtual reality, What it is, components (Video, Audio), Who is making it, the uses, and the affordability, lets take a quiz on virtual reality.
