the use of north Vietnam's Hanoi Hilton
Hoa Lo Prison, after all, is a place best known in the West as one of the prisons where American pilots who had been shot down and captured were kept as prisoners of war The pilots called it, sarcastically, the “Hanoi Hilton.” John McCain was held here at various times during his five and a half years as a POW. Some of the nearly 600 other American flyers held as POWs during the Vietnam War stayed even longer. It operated as a POW prison from August 5, 1964, to March 29, 1973
Rep Sam Johnson spent 7 years in the Vietnam pow. he enlisted to be a fighter pilot. one night on his 25th mission over North Vietnam that he was shot down. they were shot down and held as pows in Hanoi Hilton . They were tortured by getting hung by meat hooks with their hands and feet tied either in front or back of their bodies really tight so he could hardly breathe. The guards would return in intervals and tighten then so their legs and arms would turn purple and swell up twice their size.
