Initiate Rangatahi #1
Maori
Pacifica
The Initiate Rangatahi #1 programme was an incredible experience. We had the privilege of working with 12 young wahine across the initial three weeks at The Development Hub. We had the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the challenges our candidates face and we were able to link individuals to solutions and opportunities.
Many of the young women have faced hardship, abuse and challenging situations. These included substance dependency, negative social contentedness, inadequate housing and limited positive family support structures. Their passion and their commitment to the kaupapa of the programme and the support they provided each other was inspiring.
The young woman grew both personally and professionally and were eager to change their lives and pursue new opportunities and career paths. Each of them found encouragement and guidance from the various activities and thrived in the group environment. They found motivation, confidence and built lasting friendships with their peers and their tutors.
These wahine shared openly and honestly many of their disappointments, fears and successes. They enjoyed visualizing their futures and designing lives that aligned to their new goals. We are confident that they will provide additional support to each other moving forward, both practical and emotional.
We look forward to working closely with this group of wahine over the coming months and seeing them develop both personally and professionally, as individuals and as a chosen whanau.

STRENGTHS & CHALLENGES
Key learnings seen from Initate Rangatahi #1 identifying what the positives have been and what some of the challenges identified have been.
- Courtney Anderson-Hull
"I have also given up drugs and other substances while being on this course it has made me think about the positive things in life rather than the bad."
"I was lost in life...with no motivation...low self esteem and pretty much no confidence. My confidence bloomed. You get pushed to do stuff you wouldn't usually do...theres plenty of support to make you feel great about yourself."
"The most valuable thing that I've learnt from this course is that your past mistakes or experiences no longer matter enough to take over your present life and future. What does matter is whether you allow them to get the better of you, or whether you turn the into life lessons and grow from them."
- Hineheu Ryland
- Nici Tahatika
- Irae Kwan
"I joined the programme as I really want a job. I am motivated to get a job as I want my son to see me in a job."
"The goal setting was the best for me. Having something to look forward to in the future."
"My favorite part about course was having tutors/teachers who supported us and helped us to make the best decisions for our lives and our futures."

'TDH has changed my life style and the way I look at life now.... I am friendly and outcoming and can get along with other easily. It has helped me become who I am and want to be in the future. It helped me getting back into a routine, getting up early, getting out of the house."
"Before the course I was so unmotivated to even look out for a job that wasn't in hospitality as this was all I know, didn't think I could get a job any where else. Not only that but I only had experience in hospo."
"I have gained confidence, persistence to purse my goals and ways to achieve the impossible in a realistic way, easy steps to buy my own house...to save short and long term. We built bonds and connections and helped each other to learn to love ourselves and to see our flaws as strengths."
