Strong Winds
Along with falling temperatures can come strong winds. When snow is on the ground, this can lead to blizzard conditions. If ice, then power outages and falling trees can be expected. Wind chills can also make it feel colder than the thermometer shows.
Dropping Temperatures
A cold front is usually responsible for lower temperatures. After it passes, the cold, arctic air will sink in behind it moving like molasses and speading across the affected area.
Snow
As ice crystals fall they can be many different shapes. Platelets, needles, and columns are some examples. Snow may be wet (great for snowballs) or dry and powdery.
Sleet or Graupel
Sleet is caused by raindrops freezing and resembles clear ice pellets. Graupel looks like snow pellets and occurs when supercooled droplets freeze on snowflakes.
Freezing Rain
If the temperature at the ground is colder than above, rain will fall and freeze on contact with anything at or below 32F.
What is a Wintry Mix?
He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and
admiration in winter.
