Cannabis is a natural product, the main psychoactive constituent of which is tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). The cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L.) is broadly distributed and grows in temperate and tropical areas. Together with tobacco, alcohol and caffeine, it is one of the most widely consumed drugs throughout the world, and has been used as a drug and a source of fibre since historical times.

Dependence on marijuana means that the person needs to use marijuana just to feel 'normal'. In order to be diagnosed as marijuana dependent, a person needs to experience at least three of the following in the one year:Tolerance to the effects of marijuana, meaning that more marijuana is needed to get the same effect;Withdrawal from the effects of marijuana, such as irritability, trouble sleeping and depressive symptoms;Using more marijuana than was intended;Persistent desire to stop taking marijuana or to cut down and being unsuccessful at this;Spending lots of time obtaining, using or recovering from the use of marijuana;Giving up important activities in favour of using marijuana; and/orUsing marijuana even when it is known that it causes problems.
TYPE OF DEPENDENCE
This is a two-part urine test to look for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana. The test can find out if THC or related chemicals from marijuana called metabolites are in your urine. The test is considered quite accurate. You may have to do the urine test in a healthcare provider's office or with a technician present. Your healthcare provider may also order tests on samples of your hair, saliva, sweat, or blood.
