I would best describe. a music video as a short film that integrates a song with imagery, and is produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings
Based on my observation music videos use a wide range of styles and contemporary video-making techniques, combine different styles with the music, allowing audiences to interpret images and scenes from the song's lyrics, while others take a more thematic approach. Other music videos may not have any concept, being merely a filmed version of the song's live concert performance. Examples of the standard pattern (mix of performance, narrative and concept based) music videos is given in the next slide:
What Are Music Videos?
All The Start by Kendrick Lamar
Run by BTS
Reminder by Weeknd
Narrative based music videos are can be either linear, non-linear or broken.
From what I analysed after watching numerous videos is that they are usually a silent movie with the music/track itself in the background with emphasis on the lyrics allowing audiences to follow the story-line conveniently.
Secrets by The Weeknd
Delicate by Taylor Swift
Seventeen by Aleesia Cara
Wild - Troye Sivan
Performance Based videos are something that I've found fascinating because of their live concert feel
They contain clips/footage from live performances. It allows audiences to feel as if they were at a live show themselves. It usually contains vocalist/band in one or more settings meaning by, mise en scene and the locations hold significance.
DNA by BTS
The Greatest by Sia
The Middle by Zedd, Maren Morris, Grey
Dekh Tera Kya/Latthay Di Chaadar by
Quratulain Balouch & Farhan Saeed
What I love about these music videos is the amount of artistic imagery used in them.
They contains a message/ is conceptual as it uses code and conventions to build meanings while providing a clear story. Theme based MVs are usually artistic and abstract in nature.
