The children in Maximum Ride were experimented on and they had to escape the bad place they were experimented in. One of the scientists helped them and acted as a dad, but he suddenly left them. They were starving and poor with physical and mental issues. They were also fought and hurt by the scientists. Because of their problem ( the kids have wings ), no-one listens and only cares about what the kids look like.
it states, " Child abuse occurs when any adult acts in a way that harms a child under his or her care. Neglect is another type of abuse. Any single instance of emotional or physical damage to a child by an adult may be considered abuse. Most instances of abuse continue over a long period of time. " Just like in the book, the adult acted in a way that harmed the children under his care. -Both physically and mentally. Also, when they were abused it wasn't for just a day, it was for years, which made their situation worse.

it states, " ...seven hundred thousand are found to be examples of abuse that need further investigation. " which is a lot of people.
It says that they were abused and over time their lifestyle changed completely; which is a symptom of child abuse and neglect. For example, in the story the children are always prepared for another attack and are always training; which makes sense because in the article http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/ggpd/docs/2001/ga/l408_pa2/r1/2001.con/1.pdf it states, "... for millions of children in our country personal safety is not a new fear." it also states, "They wake up and go to sleep each day wondering how and when the next assault on them will occur.", while in real life, children are scared to be around adults and\or to be in dark rooms but are always on alert for a new assault.
