In 1600 people in France began to learn how to make ice to keep things cool or cool things down.
Learning about ice
John Gorrie built Oliver Evans design since Oliver never actually built it.
The Fridge had been built.
Oliver Evans, created blueprints for the first refrigeration machine that used vapour instead of liquid.
The First Design
Ferdinand Carré developed a new design using vapor-compression machines. Which became very popular.
A New Design
Flaws in the design was found. Scientist realized that if the fridge leaked it would be very toxic. They found a new substitute that was only toxic if in high doses.
More than 90% of Americans had a fridge in there homes. 6 million fridges were made per year!
Scientists learned that certain toxins emitted from fridges started to cause holes in the ozone layer. After changing the products used in refrigeration, the ozone layer has started to improve.
Bad for the environment.
Refrigeration is still wildly used all through out the world. Over 8 million fridges are sold each year. Making around 21 billions dollars in annual sales.
