A Zebra Mussel is a small, fingernail nail sized mussel.
It is named for the striped pattern on its shell.
It can range from being dark or light colored.
It is native to the Caspian Sea part of Asia.
Zebra Mussels were transported to the Great Lakes through transoceanic ships.
They are currently found in the Great Lakes, Ontario, Quebec, SE and western United States.
CRIMES AGAINST NATIVE ORGANISMS:
They have had many effects on the ecosystems: they reduce the amount of phytoplankton available for other organisms and they also increase the exposure of wildlife to contaminants They also smother native mussels by attaching to them.
