Controversy Presentation on No Turning Back By Beverley Naidoo
made by Garv Gulati
According to the authors of No Turning back, Beverley Naidoo, and of " Dark Sense of View", contributed anonymously, give examples to show the reader that physical punishment of any kind is child abuse.
What is Child Abuse and What isn't
According to the author of No Turning Back and anonymous, they think any physical punishment is child abuse (as stated in thesis), but many people disagree with this and that you should be more specific. An example of Child Abuse from No Turning Back is when Sipho is yelled at and punished by his stepdad. The author expresses her feelings about abuse by making Sipho run away from home because his stepdad is "abusing" him (Naidoo, Prologue).
What Punishments Can be Considered Child Abuse and which ones don't
According to the author Beverly Naidoo, she expresses expresses her feelings about child abuse punishments by giving an example; "Once, his stepfather had taken him to the police station and had asked the policeman on duty to teach him alesson." (No turning back), pg.31) This influences her feelings towards physical punishments for child abuse because in the prologue of the book, it states on how Sipho's stepdad "abuses" him, and the policeman punishment is an example of abuse.
Does Battered Child Syndrome Come from Child Abuse?
Child abuse can lead to a condition called battered child syndrome and sometimes people think that an action by a parent can't be abuse in any way if it doesn't affect the child(anonymous, Gale Resources). The poet, anonymous of Dark Sense of View states the after effects of child abuse; "No love at home No hugs and kisses goodbye, Everytime someone left, I thought I woud die." The graph shown in the top left corner represents the number of children who get battered child syndrome at different ages from 2006-2008.
Battered Child Syndrome is the injuries and evidence a child has been abused due to his or her physical appearence.
