Indices of depression in Brazil
In Brazil, 21% of young people between the ages of 14 and 25 have symptoms indicative of depression. Among women, the proportion is 28%, according to data from the 2nd National Survey of Alcohol and Drugs, conducted by the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp)
Antidepressant treatment should be performed considering the biological, psychological and social aspects of the patient. On average, there are no significant differences in efficacy between the different antidepressants but the profile in terms of side effects, price, suicide risk, tolerability varies greatly which implies differences in drug effectiveness for each patient. The conduct, therefore, must be individualized. Prophylactic prescription of antidepressants will depend on the intensity and frequency of depressive episodes. The risk of suicide should always be assessed and if necessary the ECT should be indicated. There is no ideal antidepressant, however, currently there is a great availability of drugs acting through different mechanisms of action which allows that, even in depressions considered resistant, the treatment can be successful.
