As current educators, it is necessary to be secure and safe about how we use technology online as our digital identity and personal information is important to be protected.
What is Digital Identity?
A digital identity is online data made up of all characteristics and personal information regarding a person’s self-online, like that of a real physical identification such as a driver license or passport which applies to the physical world (Turgeman, 2018).
What is different to the physical identification is the in-depth identification made digitally to represent your identity in the online digital world retaining data such as location, search history, social media profiles, downloads and uploaded content (Turgeman, 2018).
What is Digital Security and why do we need it?
Digital security refers to online protection, using various tools to secure one’s digital identity including their attributes and personal information from being stolen or harmed by others (Safe Online, n.d.). It is necessary to prepare digital security as the rate of cyber-attacks are common resulting in any individual online being a potential victim (Safe Online, n.d.).
Digital security is a necessary precaution as more people begin to upload their personal identity and information online such as email accounts, personal pictures and characteristics for means of work or socialising requiring safer and secure environments as the data could potentially be at serious risk (hover, n.d.).

Non-Secure Ways of Digital Security
Uploading Personal Information Publicly
Using Similar Passwords Repetitively
Teachers and students within the schooling environment would benefit from gaining a deeper understanding of the risks and dangers that are apparent in digital technologies and the reason for digital security to protect digital identities (Lizenberg, 2013).
Teachers must be cautious of their online appearance, by protecting personal content and managing who can view specific information as they must remain role models to the school community that can view them at any moment.
By maintaining digital security, teachers can ensure that any personal information shown online is protected and role model material for students and parents (Lizenberg, 2013)
How this affects teaching and learning
For students, it is necessary that education is provided regarding the importance of safety and security online to ensure students digital identities are protected from cyber-attacks or cyber thief’s which can result in forms of cyberbullying or stolen identity.
As teachers, it is important to understand student’s digital identities as it will assist in implementing learning surrounding digital culture on the ethical use of the internet, digital citizenship and ways to protect and secure digital identities (Lizenberg, 2013).
Remember to be safe and secure about how you present and protect your digital identity online.
