The title The Last Magician refers to Harte Darrigan. he is often referred to as the magician and was the last person who had the Ars Arcana, the book of power. Therefore he was the last magician to have ever had the book before he disappeared.

As a Mageus (someone who can use natural magic) her ability is to slow time. Using Ishtar's Key, a powerful artifact, she can travel into the past.

Throughout the novel Esta changed from untrusting and only mission focused, to caring about the people in the past indecisive about betraying them for the future.
Dolph becomes paranoid throughout the novel about who he can trust. Eventually the one person he thought he could trust killed him.

In the past, Harte Darrigan takes the book and disappears with it. Esta needs to go back in time and stop him and get the book before him.
Throughout the novel Harte changed from selfish are uncaring of others lives to wanting to help other people not just for himself. in the end of the novel he became a protagonist.
Nibs goes from being incredibly well mannered and innocent to evil, cruel, and determined for power.
His affinity, magic ability, is to see possible outcomes of the future.
Most trusted member of Dolph's faction. Also wants the book for himself. Ends up killing Dolph in order to take control of the faction.

The main setting is New York, New York in 1902. The setting is a huge focus in the novel because the main characters want to get out of the city. They can't however, due to a magic barrier called the brink that kills ir drives Mageus insane if crossed.
An obvious theme if the book is that people pursuing power typically have their own selfish reasons.
Harte wanted to get out of the city, and didn't care who else could've escaped.
Nibsy wanted power over all Mageus to start a war.
Dolph performed rituals on his wife in order to gain power.

Magic is nearly extinct in modern day New York. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic live in the shadows. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives. Esta is a talented thief, with her ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past. Traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Brink before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future. For Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.
Esta went back into time and joined Dolph Saunders in his endeavour to steal the book from the Order that could brink down the brink.
Esta Shows Harte Everything and He Does Something Different
Harte wanted the book for himself, but before he could employ his plan to take it, Esta showed him what would happen to everyone else if he disappeared with it. And so he ended up giving her the book. This was the climax of the book.
They Need Harte
They need him to help steal the book. Esta is from the future and knows that he will disappear from the world if he takes it. She must recruit and work with the one she needs to stop.
Nibsy Turns Out to Be Evil
Through careful planning, messing with time, and surviving a long time, NIbsy is Esta's professor.
